Maryanne and Kayla Marie's Plant Pest Solution

Hello

We are two students from Room 3, Waimea Intermediate - Kayla Marie and Maryanne. For our school topic sustainability we have been studying New Zealand plant pests.

Firstly we had to learn about the problem. We wrote five quality questions, and then answered two. We had to also find a diagram that teaches the viewer something.

We had to come up with five creative solutions to decrease New Zealand plant pests. We would like to share our best solution with you. It is: Taint the dandelions with poison so when it spreads it kills the weeds. It’s scientifically engineered so that it kills weeds but not ‘good’ plants.

Thank you for reading. We hope you like our thinking.

End of Term

Hi there

There will be no ‘Weekly Sheet’ for Week 11 as I don’t issue home learning in the last week of term.

However, the students’ publishing books are due in for marking on Wednesday. They have been working extremely well on these in class.

Wishing you all a happy, safe and fun holiday...

Jono's Descriptive Writing

The alien stood there pleased with the work he had done. His battle armour gleaming in the moonlight, shafts of serrated stone reaching to the sky like a dying man. The soft breeze whispered in his ear, the deep blue sky is a blanket being pulled over the once light world. His gun humming from the pernicious war. The dust scattered over the lifeless bodies and torrents of blood are oozing through every nook and cranny like scared animals running for cover. He is the destroyer

Kayla's Descriptive Writing

The snow licked the bare trees, that crooked left and right like a bony hand. The ice crackled over the lake as the tangerine sunrise crept over the hills. The snow is like a field of cotton landing on the rocky terrain. Birds awakened the world with the sweet sound of chirping, that enlightened the cold heavy breeze. Smells of casserole and warming soups surrounded the small yellow cottage. Water dripped down the side of the house and landed on the fluffy snow with a quiet plonk. The trees squirmed wildly like worms and a brown leaf fell from a frost bitten plant, and its branches bowed down as if to say, “Don’t worry spring's on its way."

THE JAPANESE TSUNAMI

A deadly tsunami sounds like the crashing of a car hitting into a steal pole.

The massive earthquake shakes like the rattling of a washing machine jumping up and down.

The murky flood water reminds me of a dirty bath after a game of soccer in the rain.

Crumbling buildings look like tumbling jenga blocks.

Terrifed people remind me of tiny ants running for their lives.

Gooey liquifaction reminds me of sticky Nutella spreading on my toast.

Floating vehicles look like bobbing icebergs in the ocean.

Charlotte and Brooke's Descriptive Writing

THE LONDON FIRE

The fierce fire sweeps a wave of terror, weaving throughout the city.

The crumbling London Bridge was like a gush of wind falling to the ocean below.

The shadows of smoke was swallowing the city and cries of pain within.

Suffering victims were staggering to safety as the fire burnt their souls.

The delicious bakery was burning the city into crumbs.

Deep black ashes are like dried tears - meaning an end to pain and suffering.

The devastating news felt like a nightmare that would never happen.

Now years later we remember this as a time of loved lives lost.

Caley and Kayla's Descriptive Writing

THE TANGIWAI DISASTER

The destroyed bridge is like a crumbling biscuit after cookie monster attacked it with his teeth.

The smothered victims are like scared lost animals in quicksand, unable to escape certain death.

An exploding crater reminds me of a broken water main spouting its contents everywhere.

The slipping landslide is like a slippery try scored by Piri Weepu on a rainy day.

The flooding waters are like never-ending tears after your boyfriend breaks up with you.

The brave rescuers remind me of courageous super-heroes saving people by the minute.

Petrified witnesses are like incredible statues frozen with fright.

The moonlit night is like God's weeping eye, staring down at the destruction.

Taine and Jono's WW2 Excellent Writing

Hurtling bullets look like silver raindrops, falling from the sky.

Mortar shells remind me of cracking fireworks, exploding in the sky.

Armoured tanks are like heavy trucks on a logging road.

An evil Nazi is mean like a school bully, beating you senseless.

Battle ships make me think of large ferries cruising along the ocean.

Dirty trenches are like muddy ditches in your backyard.

A blackout curfew is like a dark nightmare you wish would end.

Stealth jets are just like highly trained ninjas, attacking your city.

Kayla's Wonderful Writing

Kayla’s Octopoem

Night Time

Iridescent stars make me think of small glow worms, sprinkled across the sky.

The full moon is like a sphere shaped cheese, waiting to be nibbled at with some fancy cheese.

Speckled owls sound like musical trumpets playing in an orchestra.

Evil glowing eyes are like red flash lights staring through me.

Shooting comets are like childish macaroni and glitter art that has been tossed in the sky and left hanging.

Grieving ghosts are empty souls spreading their sadness across the globe.

Freezing wind sounds a lot like howling werewolves, in search of their fluffy pals.

Caley's Limerick

There once was a man called Louis,

Who stepped in something quite gooey.

He gave people a fright,

When he screamed with delight,

Because he found it was chop suey.
